There are many reasons why I am set on going to graduate school after I graduate from Rowan. Some of my main reasons were highlighted in Dr. Don Martin’s article “Ask 7 Questions Before Applying To Graduate School.” It is my ambition to become a professional writing tutor; however, I do not have a teaching degree or certificate. Without some kind of certification, I may not be able to get hired at a tutoring center or school program. Because of this, I want to go to graduate school at Farleigh Dickinson University and get my Masters in Teaching. Doing so will not only give me the necessary training and experience I need, it will also add strength to my resume and give me the credentials I need to be hired as a tutor. Martin’s article specifically touched base on both of these factors in the first section of the article where it gives reasons for going to grad school, with two being “to add a credential to my resume” and “to have more credibility in my chosen field.” The article also mentioned a reason that is very important to me- going to grad school “to learn more.” I always want to learn. There is never a time when I do not want to learn about something new. If I am not being intellectually stimulated, I feel unfulfilled. I know that grad school will offer me new challenges to face and new materials to master. It will also give me many learning opportunities that I cannot get elsewhere. If I have the chance to expand my knowledge and to learn more, I will take it and grad school is no exception. But Martin’s article also mentioned some options that I personally do not consider important. One of them was going to grad school “to increase my earning potentials” which is a fancy way of saying “to make more money.” When I saw this, all I could think was “really?” Money is not important to me (otherwise I wouldn’t want to become a tutor!) and I find it kind of shallow for someone to go to grad school just for the sake of earning more pay. In my opinion, facing new experiences and working toward my dream job is much more fulfilling than anything money can offer- although, I admit that I am going to need a lot of money to go t to grad school!
