Reflection Statement
Professions In Writing Arts with Professor Mangini explored various options that are available to students after graduation, such as graduate school, internships, the writing market, and possible writing careers. The review of these options helped me gain a better understanding of what to expect from each of them. It also prepared me for if I plan to follow their paths later on in my career. I have known for quite some time that I want to pursue a master’s degree and attend graduate school. However, most graduate schools require some sort of personal statement and I was unsure how to write one. The material covered in class prepared me for when I apply to graduate school and need to submit a personal statement. In class, we received and reviewed examples of personal statements. This really helped me form a picture of what an effective statement should include, and I was able to write a high-quality personal statement, which I would have not been able to do on my own. Now that I have written a personal statement, my chances of getting into graduate school are much higher and this is all thanks to the information provided in the course.
Professions In Writing Arts also covered internships. I have already had an internship, but the class provided me with helpful information if I decide to pursue another one. For example, one article explained that students can get internships through Twitter. This idea had never occurred to me and I never imagined that Twitter could be so useful. However, I now know where to look if I discover a company I want to intern at. Aside from graduate school and possibly another internship, I am also interested in publishing my writing. Before this class, I really had no idea how to approach the writing market. Because of this, I found the articles about the writing market to be incredibly helpful. I will now have more confidence when I feel ready to submit a manuscript for publication. The course also introduced me to different careers that involve writing, although I am still interested in becoming a writing tutor. Professions In Writing Arts also helped prepare me for applying to jobs by teaching me how to create an effective resume and cover letter. An impressive resume and cover letter will be beneficial for me when I apply to a job because they will help me stand out among other applicants.
While Profession In Writing Arts was very helpful in many ways, the Writing Arts program as a whole has prepared me to work in a variety of writing fields or professions. It helped me become a better, more skilled writer by providing me with practice and experience. It has honed my writing skills, making my work more precise and satisfactory. My vocabulary and diction have improved, along with my transitions and ability to connect my thoughts, making my papers flow more easily. I have also become skillful at citing and incorporating sources and quotes throughout my work, which makes me a more credible writer. During my time as a Writing Arts major, I have written both creative and academic pieces that fell within various genres, which has given me adaptability as a writer. Together, the Professions In Writing Arts course and my Writing Arts major have prepared me for any post-graduate option or writing field that I may want to enter later on in the future.
