Technology has taken over everything and social media stands at the top of new technology, with Facebook and Twitter being the big two. I am personally not very interested in these two sites, although I do use them for school. Twitter, as I have found out, is a good place to look for job opportunities and to get yourself out there. The article “Tips For Using Twitter To Score An Internship” by Briana Luca gives simple but effective advice that makes a lot of sense. Most of the tips given are things I have attempted to do when using Twitter. Luca’s first tip is “Follow your favorite companies” and I follow organizations and companies I that like such as The Poetry Foundation. Her second piece of advice is “Clean up your account” which isn’t a problem for me because I have a very clean account with no inappropriate material. The third tip mentioned “Search, search, search” is also relevant to me because I have used Twitter to search for things that interest me such as contests, competitions, etc. What I haven’t done is “Just ask” organizations or companies about job openings or possible internships. I guess it just never occurred to me to tweet anything to them because I assumed that my question would get lost among the thousands of other tweets being posted on their page. But if the article says it is a good way to find out about opportunities, then maybe I will try it sometime. The other piece of advice that I have not done is “Stay engaged.” I have tried many times to stay active on Twitter and to update it frequently because I know how beneficial it is to writers nowadays. But every time I stop tweeting at some point. I just can’t remember to go on Twitter every day. I know this is something I have to work on and get used to if I want to be a successful writer in today’s society.
One thing I do like about modern technology is that it can provide students with online internships, with or without the help of Twitter. As the article “No Matter Where You Live, Virtual Internships Are Beneficial” by Slater Katz explains, the internet is a great way to get internships even if you are not near the company or business offering it. Big cities like New York or Philadelphia are usually home to hundreds of internships but if you don’t live near the city, you are out of luck. Virtual internships eliminate this problem. I know this because last semester, I had an internship with Glassworks Literary Magazine and it was mostly virtual. By this I mean that most of the work was done online, but the interns and staff met in person a few times. I loved the internship because I was able to work on my own time, just as the article says. I was also able to submit work from wherever I wanted, whether it was from my dorm, the library, or anywhere else. One weekend I went home to North Jersey and was able to work from there. It was convenient and made the job more enjoyable and less stressful. So, whether or not obtain it through Twitter, I highly recommend trying an online or virtual internship.
